COMRADES MARATHON

Well done to our Comrades runners. As there was no public holiday after this year’s event we decided to honour our 1st man and 1st lady home at the Annual Prize Giving that usually takes place in February.

NEW MEMBERS

Since our last newsletter in February, we have 10 new members. Of these, the 4 social members participated in a race to test their strengths and they performed very well. Ronel Laidlaw-Perks was 5th lady walker in the Dick King 15km race, not bad for our best novice.

CONFEDERATION CUP SOCCER

As you will have no doubt realised there are no races allowed on these dates. 13/14th, 20/21st, 27/28th June. Please remember to make yourself visible when on the road at dusk or after dark. Cars cannot see you.

SCHEDULED RACES

From results received, Highway has been well supported at these races, especially as we have had such a wet summer. It has been rather a hit and miss whether it would be dry or not. Both long distance 50km races are on the calendar this year.

Note the dates:

Gaterite Ultra Challenge – 9th August
Lifestyle Dolphin Coast Ultra – 6th September (includes runners)

Pauline is back on the road and aiming to do the Dolphin again this year, and looking for training partners. She is a strict disciplinarian, so be prepared to train in all weathers! Contact her on appleton.p@telkomsa.net.

INCENTIVES

Please note: These incentives can only be paid if a member submits his/her duly completed quarterly race results sheets to the committee before the 15th of January of the next year. We need the sheets so that we know WHO qualifies. It is becoming increasingly difficult to access race results from hosting clubs. Most club office bearers offer their services voluntarily and over and above everything else they do.

HIGHWAY CLUB COLOURS

It is important to wear the correct Club uniform when participating in KZNA scheduled races. Navy shorts - these can be either cotton or cycling type – knee must be visible, especially for walkers – purchase at sports shops. Regulation Club vest – R90: Age category tags – to be recognised as a possible winner in each age category - R4 each: Walkers – MUST wear“Walker” badges - R4 each. All of these are available from Ann Mellor.

CLUB CHALLENGE RACES

To enter the Highway Challenge, you are required to do one (1) race from the prescribed race listing (ie a 10, 15 and 21.1 km race), and one (1) race of your own selection in each of the three race distances. The races all have to be done in 2009 and must be official races, but can be hosted in any of the Provinces. A certificate is presented to every Highway member that completes the challenge. As in previous years, we choose 3 races in each category 10km, 15km and 21km. One of these must be completed, plus another of your choice. The races are:

10km10-DecCalder Sulin, Kings Park
15km08-MarCheckout, Verulam
13-SepSAPS Striders, Kings Park
15-NovStella Tribute, Durban
21km15-MarPostNet, Pietermaritzburg

Finally, I will be off the road for 4 weeks from 26th May, due to undergo a hip operation. Heather Schutte will be doing the honours as far as weekly news goes, so please pass on any news to her at hmsmarketing@iafrica.com. Once this is all over, I will be a new person as one of the criteria is to keep active.
