November 2008

Well, it looks as though you are stuck with me for another year as no-one wanted the job. There seem to be a number of 10km races next year, so maybe we shall see more of each other. We have been given the race calendar for 2009, but were warned not to rely on it completely, as the clubs sometime change the starting times. The flyers are the best bet for correct information.

Our runners have been active and a fairly large contingent has been reported seen at races. Roshni Natasen has done very well this year, winning a number of races in her age category, including the recent South Coast. Helen Mitchelmore formed one of the Kwa Zulu Natal team for cross country, seems as though ‘mountain goat’ was an apt description, as she has excelled in this field.

Of the walkers, Dave & Antoinette have been most active with Kathy slotting into a fair number and winning in her age category in the South Coast 21km.

Injury has taken its toll – normal wear & tear, but also Georgette de Vos cracked 3 ribs when she fell in the Dolphin 50km and Sheila Coleman broke her wrist in a fall while muscle picking. Stay on terra firma Sheila.

The 20km & 50km Ilembe (Dolphin) race was well supported by Highway members. For the first time runners were included. Previously it was “the comrades” of walking races. We can only assume that as numbers dwindle, they needed to widen the net to attract more athletes. Most of our team were uncomplimentary about the course, a lot of on dirt – dusty, soft dirt and sparse number of water tables. Here Pam von Aulock came 3rd in the 10km.

These are the remaining races for the Highway Challenge. A certificate is presented to every member that completes the challenge and submits their challenge record as required on the date specified.
