November 2007
Well done to our walking ladies who for the 10th year have won the Highway Ladies Time Trial Walking League. Considering how the average age of our members is increasing each year we must expect that the youngsters walking for other clubs should start beating us on a regular basis and that we can expect another club to take over from us.
What is happening to our sport with all the races being cancelled? It really messes our members around as often we pitch for a race to be told it has been cancelled. Or we arrive for a 5 am start and find it has been changed to 7am. What can ASA or KZNA do? Should they be penalising clubs more? Would that be fair? The usual reason for cancellations seems to be lack of sponsorship. Can we expect clubs to put on races that will cost a club R40 an entrant when the entry fee is only R20? Would we be prepared to pay R40 for a 10 or 15k race? Obviously not a simple as we might think.
As we draw to the end of the year we can look back with pride on our member's achievements on the roads. Whether it be coming 1st at Two Ocean or Masters, just making the cut off for Comrades, or attending Saturday Club Walks regularly we are proud of what Highway has achieved during 2007.
Our Awards evening will be held in February (date/venue tba) so please send in your quarterly results sheets so that we can choose our 2007 Prize winners. Remember - no results, no prizes.
On a personal note I would like to wish you all well over the festive season and everything you wish yourself for 2008.
