November 2006

We are into that time of the year that we can enjoy those bright early mornings before the traffic whizzes around the suburbs. It is amazing what a difference half an hour makes to the day. There is still time to have a social cup of coffee before rushing off to do what has to be done. And as we come into the 'silly season', there is going to be more rushing to do.

We have seen the demise of a couple of races this quarter. The Bluff Vets - due to extensive road works in and around the start and finish, then the Crescent 21.1km / 10km that was due to take place the following weekend. Both popular races leaving a large hole in the calendar, lets hope that there are no more surprises in store. This year the Illovo Christmas Challenge is no longer a two lap race. It is now a circular route of 15km. An idea that we can bounce around - if you are not planning to break the record, how about Highway doing a theme again. It does not really matter who wins, but if a little effort is made then it adds to the enjoyment of the day. One of the ideas was the "Highway Toy Box", only requiring a hat, or wig or face paint to represent a toy. Some of the suggestions were: Toy soldier, Spiderman, Curly haired doll, clown, Mr. Plod, Barbie & Ken, Fireman, Teddy bear, toy cat, Cowboy or cowgirl, sailor doll, mermaid, fairy, Princess, Pinnochio, Alice in wonderland or one of her friends, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Pirate, what about a voodoo doll!!

A few of our Highway members have been lonely carrying the Highway flag. What with business commitments, holidays, injuries, old age, and baby sitting our team has dwindled somewhat this year. Kathy Holland has been putting in some sterling times in the away races and the latest was 5hrs 53 mins for the Soweto marathon. Good luck to those who are participating in the Sani Stagger at the end of November. The road is being tarred so this is the last time on dirt.

Christmas Breakfast: This will take place on Saturday 2nd December at Roses Coffee Shop in the Kloof Mall. Please give your name to Sylvia Nilsen. If you don't book, then don't expect a place at the table. It is called good manners.

Things never stay the same and frankly it would be very boring if it did, and one of our main focuses should be to get some new blood (and preferably younger blood!!) into the Club. I shall leave you with these words: "instead of seeing the rug being pulled out from under us, we can learn to dance on a shifting carpet".

May I take this opportunity of wishing each and every one a very blessed and happy Christmas with your families, and make good fortune shine on you all.

Lynn
