It is with sad note that I start this Chairman’s Chirp. Dee Coleman, a long standing member of the Highway Club, lost her husband Sean earlier this month, and two weeks ago while on a club walk, Colin Kelly, who has only been with the club for a year, collapsed on the Everton Bridge near Kloof and passed away. We extend our sympathies and condolences to both Dee and Rose and families on the passing of Sean and Colin.
We are now almost finished with the first month of 2017 and many of our members have run or walked several races already. On Sunday the gazebo was erected at the PDAC 25km race and it was good to be at the finish and see so many of our members finishing the race. It did get quite warm as the morning progressed but I heard that the seconding tables were good and there was enough to drink and keep one hydrated.
Well done to all who finished the race and especially to Roshini Natasen who came first in her age category and to Pamela Corlett and Susan Young who were the first and second ladies in the walking, as well as Thomas Schoeman who was the first Highway runner home.
Just a reminder the awards evening will be held towards the end of February 2017 and an email will be sent out to all our members to let you know as to exact date and where it will be held. Also if you want to receive your awards for the Club Challenge you need to submit your forms with the results on to Margie timeously so she can collate them and make out the certificates.
We have the new license numbers now and a number of our members have already collected theirs. Remember you need your new KZN licenses from now on if you want to participate in any official races. So to avoid being disqualified renew your licenses as soon as possible. You can collect them from Pam Stewart at 20A Kingsmead Drive Westville from Monday to Friday from 5:00 to 6:00 in the evening and on weekends by special appointment. Her phone number is 082 936 2740.
Remember to bring along your proof of payment if you paid into the bank by EFT and a completed Membership Renewal Form. If you need new age tags and the new walker badges you can purchase them at the same time you collect your license numbers.
To all our ladies please try to attend the Ladies Time Trial League which starts on the 8th March 2017 at Forest Athletic Club. There are also snacks to be enjoyed after the 4km race. There are also a lot of lucky draw prizes of which one is a pair of New Balance running shoes at every Time Trial. If you attend all the time trials you will also receive a special New Balance T Shirt.
Regards Brian Stewart

2017 sees a new format for the Highway Challenge, which now gives more athletes the chance to compete. So for this year and going forward, the challenge will work as follows:
Races included will be 10kms, 15/16kms, 21kms and the new 42kms.
You will need to complete 2 races in any 3 of the distances above.
Example 1: 2 x 10kms, 2 x 15kms, 2 x 21kms
Example 2: 2 x 15kms, 2 x 21kms, 2 x 42kms.
The inclusion of the 42kms will see a lot more of our running members being able to take part in the challenge, as these are the guys that concentrate on the longer distances, and were excluded in the past as they normally don’t do the shorter races.
Any questions regarding the new format, please give me a call.
