The January newsletter will come out a little early so we have a chance to wish all our members a great Christmas filled with much joy and exciting times spent with their families. We hope that everyone is safe over Christmas and that we will find time to exercise a little between all the overindulging.
Traditionally I have always had something to say about heart attacks having had a couple myself. So guys if you have pains in your arms , jaw or sides of chest then my suggestion is DO NOT go to your GP but head straight for a hospital 24hr emergency centre. Your GP normally has a very old ECG which normally has a few leads not working and a little elderly nurse who runs it. Your GP sees many of these every week but usually of a healthy individual. He might end up treating you for indigestion. The hospital 24 emergency sees 3 people every day who have had a heart attack. They are usually better at seeing that you have had. So my advice, head for the hospital if you have pains. By the way indigestion pain is extreme but is in centre of the chest and not on the sides.
The year has been good for Highway and we have achieved a lot. With comrades, Ladies time trial, weekly road races and in the Masters Track and Field we have raised the Highway flag proudly.
The club is run by a very capable committee to a very high standard. Margie Fisher has had many years on the committee and has recently taken a break from all her duties. The club is immensely indebted to Margie for setting a very high standard and always putting the club at the foremost in her life. We wish her a great retirement. Antoinette has joined the committee to take over some of her duties and then other duties have been spread out to other committee members and the Saturday morning walk management has been taken over by Lil, Uli, Helen and Cecily. I thank them all for volunteering. Without volunteers the club would not function.
The committee has agreed to bring the awards evening forward and thus it will happen on the 12th January. Please make a note in your diary. The meal of lamb on the spit with veggies and salad and garlic bread will be subsidised by the club and will cost the members only R100. The awards evening is where the club gets together and recognises the members who have excelled throughout 2017. It would be nice if all members attended. It will be held at Hillcrest Villagers Club and there will be the club bar running.
Hillcrest have asked Highway to run a table for their race next year and we have agreed. Please can as many as possible volunteer to help. If you are helping on the Sunday at our table then you can run the helpers race on the Saturday before. We would need about 15 members to run the table.
Well it only remains for me once again to wish you a very happy Christmas and then a new year where all your wishes come true.
Monika and Edwin Piefel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 8th December 2017. Congratulations Monika and Edwin! Wishing you many more happy and healthy years.

Please take photos at races you attend and send to the editor for inclusion in the newsletter.

Birthdays in January
Firstly, apologies to Helen Clarkson. She celebrated her birthday on 3 December and it was inadvertently left off the December list.
